After the surface has been adequately prepared, it is now time for the contractor to determine the layout of the space. This is a very important step in the process as it ensures a finished product that is visually appealing. Many contractors skip this step and run into problems such as having to use very thin slivers of material at the end of a run, transitions that are in full view, and cuts in the middle of a room. Take the time to discuss layout with your contractor and make sure you ask plenty of questions. Doing so will help ensure that you end up with a visually appealing final product.
Skilled contractors will use a variety of tools and techniques to ensure a proper layout. Many contractors will perform what is called a “dry layout or dry-run” prior to commencing with the installation to be sure that they don’t run into any unforeseen issues. Although far less common, some luxury contractors will work with interior designers to plan the entire installation in CAD based design software, providing yet another level of fail-safe prior to installing very expensive material.
